One of the positive aspects of contemporary discourse is our attention to mental health. In a world rife with those suffering from depression, anxiety and other such issues, utilizing creativity to incentive action, bring people out of isolation, and offer a healing voice can be an effective way to tackle the afore-mentioned issues. And that is why rock music is as splendid as it comes – for, it offers a platform for boosting creativity, for helping people come out of their shell; understated as it is, rock music has proven to be an effective force at tackling mental health issues. Of course, the art is only as effective as the practitioner. Thankfully, Florida-based Güten Morgan’s latest, titled ‘Scars’, is a triumphant illustration of some of the healing powers of rock music.

Dedicated to, and inspired by, a friend who succumbed to emotional ailment (post which the bridge was added), Morgan’s ‘Scars’ valiant aim is to empathize with people with emotional issues using the canvas of rock music with a palette filled with the colors of the classic 70’s and contemporary grunge. Written in the key of B minor at an up-tempo pace, ‘Scars’ oozes with sheer honesty and a vibrant frankness about some of life’s basic aspects, through its lyrics and arrangement. The electric rhythm guitar hits the mark right away at the beginning with its signature i – bVII chord riff which is at once basic and hypnotic. And the songwriting is just as no-nonsensical and powerful as one would expect of a rock number. Indeed, with lyrics such as ‘Days slip away, memories fade, did they walk away, did I change, I don’t know…’, Morgan, a long-standing practicing oncologist, has simply poured out thoughts that run in most people’s minds but which might be deemed too hesitant to voice out. That is precisely what rock music was made for, and with a number thunderously evocative of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, Morgan rises to the occasion in stellar fashion with a vocal timbre that is at once gruffly endearing and silkily ponderous.

The major portion of the number is delivered using only a finite number of notes from the B minor scale, save for the bridge which oversees a transition of key and resolution, signifying a certain transcendence of realm, before returning to normal proceedings. The arrangement is just as matter-of-fact and indefatigably pragmatic, with the ever-running electric guitar counterpoint playing a key role in elevating the storytelling aspect of the number, and the other elements including the drum, bass, and piano all playing their respective parts to perfection – with the snare in particular offering a deliciously well-rounded sound, mixed at the Cedar Magnolia Studio. Overall, the arrangement and tempo is rendered to boost one’s energy levels, as well as one’s creativity via a down-to-earth application of proper technique, and, more importantly, inviting the relevant listener to into the song’s lyrical theme and out of isolation.

At a duration of two minutes and forty two seconds, ‘Scars’ is a pragmatic triumph and a testament yet again as to how rock music has the capacity to help the listener to transcend mental realms, inspired and driven by the very two qualities it aims to shine a light on: Pain and Hope.
