In the midst of my Instagram feed scrolling, a particular post managed to seize my attention. Its essence was succinctly expressed: "Melody is what the listener remembers, Chords are what fuel the emotions behind the melody, and Rhythm is what drives the song and the listener together." Understanding this fundamental truth often holds the key to crafting sonic magic that is both unique and self-inspired, regardless of genre. However, when we consider rock - that versatile canvas embracing every conceivable lyrical theme from protest to romance, spirituality to euphoria, and nostalgia to a blend of them all - the importance of powerful songwriting and arrangements cannot be overstated. It is within the context of this triumvirate - melody, chords, and rhythm - that the true artistry of a rock musician is revealed. Does the artist possess the ability to ignite emotions, evoke memories, and propel the listener forward? In the case of Les Fradkin's compilation album, titled 'Artist Kit Sampler,' the answer rings with a resounding affirmative.

Nestled within the expansive realm of rock, 'Artist Kit Sampler' proudly flaunts a sonic audacity that embraces nostalgia, spirited energy, and profound introspection - all pivotal to the genre. This is made manifest through the adept songwriting of Les Fradkin and Loretta Fradkin, the diverse range of arrangements spanning classic rock, rockabilly, contemporary ballads, and anthemic tones, and the innovative elements that deviate from the rock norm while enhancing the lyrical themes. The invigorating opening track, 'Jangleholic,' serves as an autobiographical prologue, masterfully presented in D Major. It narrates the evolution of music across decades, intertwined with Fradkin's personal experiences and illustrious musical journey. This composition seamlessly fuses folk and hard rock, punctuated by expert solos and layers that celebrate the iconic Rick 360/12, thereby enhancing the nostalgic essence. Following suit is 'God Bless California,' a midtempo rockabilly piece seasoned with country nuances and harmoniously presented in G Major. The arrangement skillfully combines 12-stringed electric and bass guitars with synth brass textures, while mellotron vibes infuse rhythmic momentum. 'Magic Attic' transports us back to D Major, encapsulating elements of a power ballad and gospel within a contemporary soundscape. This track also shines a spotlight on Fradkin's remarkable versatility, as he not only assumes the role of singer-songwriter but also performs all the instruments, showcasing mastery over the Starr Labs Clipper DX5 - a MIDI guitar that harks back to his pioneering work in the early 80s.

As the album unfolds, 'Everything is Wrong' reintroduces an upbeat tempo, featuring a protest anthem crafted with a stadium rock foundation infused with ethnic undertones. An interlude with Yannian cinematic vibes adds depth to the arrangement, while the lyrics wield impactful imagery: "Endless drone, wake up alone, Driving in the dark to work, you're never home, Another resume, you while the day away, Fire up the Internet, no work or play." 'System Crash' retains the protest anthem motif but diverges greatly in lyrical tone and arrangement. This track spotlights Fradkin's prowess on the MIDI guitar, masterfully mixed to withstand the test of time. Its poignant instrumentation fuses orchestral and anthemic rock elements, underscored by universally familiar computer-based terminologies to illustrate society's shortcomings. ' Under The Covers,' set in the classic rock domain and anchored in G Major, lyrically delves into the theme of enduring romance through time. With introspective lines like "You hear me but don’t see me, I’ve spent all my life on the run, So let’s get Under the Covers, And turn two lost souls into one," this track is a testament to the power of lyrics and storytelling.

With its rich array of arrangements, emotive textures, tonal shifts, and profound lyrical themes, 'Artist Kit Sampler' presents something for every listener, transcending backgrounds and preferences. Clocking in at twenty-three minutes and three seconds, the album stands as a resplendent testament to rock's ability to elevate simple melodies into memorable soundscapes, to infuse chords with emotions that underscore lyrics, and melody, and to imbue rhythm and tempo with driving force. It serves as a testament to Les Fradkin's enduring decades-long career, marked by pioneering work with the MIDI guitar, and his remarkable versatility as a singer, songwriter, and producer.
